A conversation with King David's Harp (Begena) Award winner, Michael Tilahun Dejene
Interviewer: Tiemar
Interviewee: Michael
Tiemar: Hello Michael!
Michael: Hello, nice to see you today, Tiemar.
T: First of all, congratulations on the award.
M: Thank you
T: Can you introduce yourself please?
M: My name is Michael. I'm in year 4 and I'm 9.
T: Congratulations again on the award. If I told you 10 months ago that you would be standing on stage winning a trophy for playing King David's Harp, what would you have said?
M: Thank you. Really I didn't think could have done it without my mum, Dn Wale [instructor], you - Tiemar and I didn't really expect to get the award because it was really hard for me and I didn't think I was gonna get the award like this.
T: It's no secret that the beginning was rough. There were days you didn't even want to walk through the door. What changed?
M: Really what changed was, over time, I started to consider practising and all the time my mum was encouraging me. So eventually I started to try change my mood, and then when I got there, I was very happy with myself and I wanted to learn more.
T: And you learnt it incredibly fast. How did it feel when you finally got the hang of it?
M: I felt very proud of myself. It was very nice. I was very proud of myself and all the success and I couldn't believe I done it. And I couldn't have done it without my mum, my dad, and all the family who from the start kept encouraging me. I also couldn't have done it without my brother who gave me happiness at some sad times.
T: I heard that you love the coding class too. Is that right?
M: Yes, because I like working with computers and other advanced technologies. It also might help with my future life and it's also very fun to learn.
T: Thanks for your time.
M: You're welcome.
